In reply to your request for service information regarding the above-named individual who died on 5 August 1945 in England; we are pleased to provide you with a synopsis of his service. Pte. MacDermott served in Canada, Britain and Northwest Europe. Through his records the Mc and Mac seems to vary, however he signs his attestation paper MacDermott.

Private Michael Joseph MacDermott was serving with the South Saskatchewan Regiment at the time of his death, however, on enlistment he was serving with the Royal Canadian Corps. of Signals and then transferred to the Canadian Infantry Corps. while overseas.

Michael Joseph MacDermott was born in Dublin, Ireland on 1 August 1918. His mother was Mary Shepherd/MacDermott. Michael enlisted with the Canadian Army (Active Force) for service in the Second World War on 17 November 1939 in Toronto. The address for his mother and himself, was 349 Alberta Street North, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

On 31 March 1945 he was wounded during the battle action of Gendringen, near the town of Etten (municipality of Doetinchem) and was in critical condition when admitted to #6 Canadian F.S.U. During the action he had suffered penetrating shrapnel wounds to his chest, abdomen and pelvis. He was treated also in #3 Canadian Casualty Clearing, still in critical condition but stable, he was evacuated to England. Private Michael Joseph MacDermott is buried in Kilgobbin Old Church Cemetery, County Dublin, Ireland.
