Background
There are 74 military collections in Canada recognized as museums by the Directorate of History and Heritage, Canadian Armed Forces. The collection in the D.V. Currie VC Armoury, Moose Jaw does not have museum status. Rather, it is an historical collection with a Curator appointed by the Commanding Officer of the Saskatchewan Dragoons as per the Standing Orders of the unit. Significant effort over many years has been made by Moose Jaw citizens such as Gerry Carline and Ron Hammond to collect items, create displays, and promote the collection. Some of the display cases were made by college students in Moose Jaw.
Collection Priorities
The the first priority of the Historical Collection is the heritage of the Saskatchewan Dragoons and all battalions and units connected to it through its lineage and perpetuations. Additionally, the Historical Collection focuses on units that paraded, trained, recruited, or were headquartered in the armoury. See the Lineage showing the Saskatchewan Dragoons and South Saskatchewan Regiment. An inventory of the Historical Collection artefacts on display has been done. You can see the List with descriptions and links to images. There is also a special presentation online of the Vehicle Park in front of Armoury
Current Activities
In 2025 the main efforts are to participate in training through the Organization of Military Museums of Canada, triage and inventory artefacts in storage, create policies and procedures, and enhance the exposure of the collection through tours, digitization, and presentation online.
Military Units Associated with the Armoury
Based on an assessment of the lineage of the Saskatchewan Dragoons, and research into various units, we are priorizing acquisition, retention, digitization, preservation, conservation, and presentation of artefacts relating to the units listed below. The Historical Collection excludes content from the navy and air force.
